Happy holidays, everyone!
Belated happy birthdays to charmingmonstrs and northbard !!
The holidays were decent to me. I went out to Fredericton to visit my brother and his family. My nephew is five and insanely energetic, particularly when the kid has a stack of presents taller than he is.
My neice, being a baby, upheld the age-old law of 'if the baby is sick, thou shalt catch it'. It's tough to avoid getting a bug when said baby sucks on her fist and then smacks you in the face with it. So... I've spent the last few days cocooning with a nasty flu-type bug, but it's finally fading.
That's about all the excitement in my world these days.
HAPPY NEW YEARS to all.
Cheers! |

I think I just wrote an essay that uses the D&D theory that has playsers saying "I disbelieve what I'm seeing to figure out if it's actually an illusion or not" to prove that reality actually exists.
A quick and warm thank you to all the well wishers on my birthday. If I haven't replied directly to your posts, I will tonight. Just had to finish this paper up first.
Cheers! |

One of these days I'm going to have to sit on someone who knows what they're doing and get them to show me how the heck to make this thing look the way I want it to... like adding a background picture or the like.
Computer literate, yes. Programming literate? Erm... you use letters and numbers for that stuff, right? |

I missed Sunday gaming again. I suck, I know.
I also know that I owe a few folks phone calls and coffee get togethers and the like. Just a heads-up that the next couple of weeks are going to be insane for me. I've a 12 page history paper and a 8 page philosophy paper due, as well as getting caught up on readings so that I don't have to cram before exams.
Begging for patience from folks. I'll re-emerge when the workload settles down a bit. |

I had a grand time tonight. It was good to see folks I'd lost touch with. It was wonderful to kick back for an evening with people that I'm comfortable around.
I think that somewhere in the past few years I've lost a lot of the desire and ability to put on the 'I don't care, fuck ya' attitude that used to make up so much of my armour. It's put me on odd footing where I find myself approaching people on the uneven landscape of the uncertainty that comes with out-of-pracitice social awkwardness.
It's weird. I feel like I'm chewing on my own foot at times, but that's not going to stop me from making a go of it.
Friendships are always a matter of give and take. I know that, I've just always been overprotective of myself and have undoubtedly sucked at the giving end of the equation. I've got to work on that.

Well, that was a fun couple of weeks where I dropped off the face of the planet to work on a couple of essays and to study for a test.
After spending the weekend writing about Marx and Weber's views of capitalism, I'll say this:
1) Marx's theory of how utopia will work has more holes in it that a block of swiss cheese that's been the victim of a drive-by
and
2) Calvinism is a scary, scary religion. When you look at the congregation and say 'most of you are going to hell except the for the elect few and there's nothing anyone can do to change it because God decided that's how it's going to be when he laid out his vast plan', it's amazing that they actually developed a seriously devout work ethic rather than throwing up their hands in defeat and choosing a hedonistic way of life.
Appologies for those who phoned me over the past couple of weeks. I'll be returning the messages tomorrow. I've had the phone off while philosophy frustrated the heck out of me. It turned out well, though. I am pleased.
Kat: Can't make poker this weekend. Sorry! |

OK!
I really, really, really, really,(have I mentioned really?)want to see Chinese Lantern Festival . This coming weekend is the last chance as it's last showing is on October 1st. Does anyone want to come along with me this weekend? I'm good for Thursday, Friday or Sunday nights as I'm stuck at a familial wedding on Saturday eve. The festival runs from 5pm until 10pm.
Any interest out there? Leave a note here if you are and we'll figure out the best time for all. If not, I'm going anyway dern it! |

I think I slept funny last night and managed to pull a tendon in my neck. I woke up and was barely able to turn my head. I got lightheaded for a couple of hours this afternoon and debated going to the ER to have them check it out. Then I had the 'wait... have I eaten yet today' thought and solving that seems to have cleared it up quite a bit.
The downside of all of this was that plans for today got canceled. The upside is that I'm now ahead on my philosophy reading.
BTW, I hope Naz had a great b-day on Friday eve as I know I had a smashing time at the party. For those of you who said 'add me to your friendslist' that night... erm.... right... memory of nicknames not so good. Please slap me upside the head with a red herring and I'll add you. |

Has anyone ever studied philosophy before? I'm just beginning to wade into Plato's Republic and I'm not entirely certain of the best way to take notes on the text. Right now I'm inclined towards tracking the two sides of the argument by noting the flow of statements and rebuttals. Has anyone come across a better way to handle this? |

Went to see Spamalot yesterday. A quick thank you to Kat for getting the tickets for a cheap price. The seats were great, as was the show! The show was quite well thought-out and the performances were all dandy. It varied from the movie in a number of areas that really did compliment the overall show and Idle did an amazing job of spoofing broadway shows as a genre.
Highly recommend this for anyone who likes comical musicals and/or Monty Python.
Oh! For anyone who's going to see Covenant (and knows me), as I live around the corner from the venue, I'd be more than happy to have folks over beforehand or afterwards for food and drinks.
Just drop me a line if you want to come by and I'll make certain I've snacks enough to go around. |

| The UofT frosh pack 2006 |
|

Perhaps due to the wisdom of the ages, or at least the realization that a large group of 18 year olds are going to be faced with the challenges of learning to do their own cleaning... the frosh kits are packed in a nice, canvas laundry bag.
Along with a batch of candy and various pamphlets advertising activities around campus they included:
A bar of soap (so they remember to keep themselves clean) Shampoo (see above) Two razors Laundry detergent (again with the 'remember to clean thyself') Three sample packs of gum (for after all the beer at frosh week) Tylenol (for after all the beer at frosh week) One pack coffee (for after all the beer at frosh week) Two condoms (for after all the beer at .... you get the picture) Strepsils (for after any sore throats caught from activities with the above mentioned condoms).
On a side note, have you ever noticed that it can be perfectly fine to be silly at your own whim, but when someone expects you to be silly on command your first reaction is 'fuck you'? Well, maybe not everyone, but I seem to be afflicted with the attitude. |

Well, I've done a rather stellar job of mucking up a lot of friendships over the past couple of years. No one to blame but myself, really, and thanks to those patient few who stuck through my insanity with me.
I'm finally giving into the inevitable and starting up a livejournal because it is, I am told, the best way to keep in touch with what's going on in people's lives these days. Friends, please let me know if there are folks out there who I should be friending as I'm still trying to sort out who's who on this whacky thing.
For the record: Going to frosh week at the tender age of 32 garners a lot of really odd looks from everyone around you. |
